The most common query I’m asked by folks making a primary enquiry about counselling is ‘What type of counselling psychologists do you do?’
What is normally meant by this is, ‘What kinds of drawback do you offer counselling for?’ Most counsellors and psychotherapists, myself included, don’t specialise in one type of downside, as all problems or difficulties affecting emotions and thinking have similarities, and principally reply to remedy in comparable ways.
So the reply to the question ‘What kinds of drawback do you offer counselling for?’ would be something like ‘Difficulties with feelings and thinking’, moderately than particular single points like, say, ‘low self-worth’, or ‘worry of failure’. Most counselling and psychotherapy offers with the whole person, and doesn’t usually separate off one thing they’re thinking or feeling or doing.
This is just a general rule, however. There are some therapies which do concentrate on particular types of difficulty, often ones which make use of a particular resolution-based approach. Counselling for addictions is an apparent example, a specialism which normally entails a progressive, guided programme. Others is perhaps bereavement or consuming problems. Particular section of the population, similar to young folks or ladies, may also be identified as teams needing a specialist approach to some extent, but on the entire these use the same strategies as any other psychological counselling. The primary distinction might be that the agency has been set as much as deal with that specific problem or group, has acquired funding for it, and so focuses it’s assets in that area. A person counsellor or psychothearpist could deal in a particlar area because it has especially interested them, or they’ve carried out extra training in it, or probably had particular expertise of the issue themselves.
What counsellors and psychotherapists mean after they converse of different types of therapy is the difference within the theoretical orientation of the therapist, not within the types of drawback in which they specialise. There are a number or appraoches, broadly divisible into the three areas of Humanistic, Psychodynamic and Cognitve-Behavioural. Even a brief description of every type of method and it is subdivisions is beyond the scope of this article. I’ll subsequently limit it to the two principal approaches which I make use of myself, Particular person Centred (a ‘humanistic’ method) and Psychodynamic.
Particular person Centred Counselling and Psychotherapy
At the centre of the Particular person Centred method is the concept the Counsellor is a ‘guest’ on the earth of the client’s expertise, with all that this implies relating to respect and trust.
The consumer is considered to be primarily trustworthy, that she or he knows someplace, somehow, what they want, and that they have a want for growth. The counsellor can help convey these into awareness and help the client to utilise them.
Another central idea is ‘situations of worth’. Situations are imposed early in life by which an individual measures their very own worth, how acceptable or unacceptable they are. A easy instance might be ‘Don’t ever be offended, or you may be an unsightly, shameful person, and you will not be loved.’ The message this carries could be something like ‘If I am indignant it means I am worthless, subsequently I must never be angry.’ The person will inevitably feel offended, possibly ceaselessly, and conclude from this that they must therefore be valueless, ugly, shameful. One other could be ‘For those who do not do well academically, it means you might be silly and you can be a failure in life’. This sort of situation will tend to stick with the person indefinitely, and he or she might have been struggling for years to live up to what is perhaps inconceivable conditions of worth. If this form of inner conviction is dropped at light, and it is roots understood totally, it may be that the individual can see that it is not actually true, it’s been put there by others, and my be able to move away from it.
